BELIZE

Belize is one of our favorite countries. What's not to like about extensive wildlife-rich rainforest, superb Mayan ruins, one of the world's most fascinating cave adventures, the second largest barrier coral reef in the world, and secluded islands just made for an escape? Add the fact that it's an English-speaking country, just a 2.5 hour flight from the US and has wonderful lodges and you seem to have a place is impossible to say no to. And we don't.

One of the advantages of Belize is its size; it's compact, yest ahs frequent small-plane services to get about to the more distant points quickly and inexpensively. There are road transfers available to pretty much anywhere as well. You can be taking a final snorkel on a coral reef one morning, canoeing an inland rainforest river that same afternoon, then climbing a Mayan pyramid the next morning. If you're a diver you can explore Belize's famous Blue Holes, or drop down among circling sharks. Snorkelers don't miss out on these either. For those with a history bent, and for those who haven't, the Mayan ruins are extensive and easily accessed; even Tikal in Guatemala can be explored with an easy day trip from your hotel. Wildlife lovers can expect black howler monkeys, kinkajous, pehaps jaguarundis and ocelots and a variety of tropical birders. And speaking of birds, Belize is a birder's paradise, on the must visit list for all serious birders. In cooperation with The Lodge at Chaa Creek we have special birding packages - see our Belize birding at Chaa Creek page here.

Belize hotels and lodges can be both a la carte, or all-inclusive, or might offer both. We like the all-inclusive lodges, as you know up front your final cost, and once inland it's likely you'll be taking advantage of everything the lodge has to offer, including meals, anyway.
