This is no big ship, but the best way to see the Amazon, on a beautifully crafted small river boat (32 passengers maximum) with twice daily off-boat excursions on foot or by skiff deep along small waterways. This is one of National Geographic's "25 Greatest Adventures in the World." We've done this trip and despite our world-wide traveling consider it in the top 5 of all our travel ever. The discount is for two departures only, January 11 and February 29, 2008, and there are only 32 cabins in total (16 per trip). The boat is based in Iquitos, heart of the upper Amazon River. There are plenty of other non-discounted departures throughout the year. You'll see pink river dolphins, up to 8 species of monkeys, lots of tropical birds including macaws, caimans, and much else, all in the company of the best naturalist guides on the river. You'll even get a chance to fish for Piranha along the way. Food's good too, as are the air-conditioned cabins. There's also a guided look around Lima, and you can extend your trip to Machu Picchu.
