2008
Includes: Newhaven station, Tanami track, Lake Gregory, Canning Stock
Route, Wells 35-51.
Search for the Princess Parrot! Residents of the arid deserts, Princess
Parrots are regularly seen in the area around Wells 39-40 near Lake
Tobin during winter. From Alice Springs we will travel a little way
along the Tanami Track before stopping at Newhaven Reserve. Deep in
the heart of the Northern Territory, Newhaven was a vast cattle station
purchased by donation by members of Birds Australia. It is now owned
and managed by Australian Wildlife Conservancy. These 2,626 square
kilometres of natural habitat have never been overgrazed by stock
and much of the natural vegetation remains. The reserve has a number
of different habitats ranging from salt-lakes and claypans, sand dunes
to rocky ridges With the 4WD vehicles, we will be able to travel along
the sandy tracks to explore and birdwatch in many areas of the reserve.
From Newhaven, we continue up the Tanami to the northern most point
of the Canning Stock Route near Balgo and camp for two nights on the
shores of Lake Gregory. Our trek along the Canning Stock Route will
be tough going at times but it will be memorable experience. We will
pass by some spectacular scenery such as Lake Tobin and the Breaden
Pools. We will experience the sheer beauty of the changing landscape
with its sand dunes which vary in height between from 2-3 metres to
over 16 metres We will continue down the Canning, before exiting the
track near the Kunawarritji community. We will then trek along the
Gary Junction Road through the Gibson Desert back to Alice Springs.
The leader will be Allan Richards who is the Activities Officer for
Birding NSW. Allan has led many field excursions and tours for Outback
Track Tours including a previous tour along the Canning Sock Route.
